I am happy to announce that we are releasing a new recording on July 29th! Its called "Please Return The Evening - Cherry Poppin’ Daddies Salute the Music of the Rat Pack.” This recording was a total labor of love. We wanted to pay tribute to one of our biggest influences, The Rat Pack. We cover songs by Frank, Dino, and Sammy in our own inimitable style, while staying true to the swagger and vibe of the originals.
I grew up in a small hamlet in upstate NY (infamous in mid 20th century crime syndicate lore) called Apalachin. Back in the day there used to be quite a few of those sensational, red tuck and roll vinyl boothed Italian restaurants around our area… you know, the kind with the red and white checkered tablecloths and the Chianti bottle candle dripping all over it? The kind with Frankie and Dean playing constantly on the jukebox and their headshots enshrined on the wall right behind the bar… next to the photo of the pope? Yeah? Well I’d wipe down and buss those tables every night, so this stuff is pretty much in my DNA.
In the Northeast, we gotta have our schmaltz like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove - simultaneously smooth and tough. This is what Please Return The Evening is servin’ up; so tuck a big napkin into your velour tracksuit shirtfront and dig in, because only one thing is for sure, Paisan… life is too short. Abbondanza!

So we are headed out soon to the Southeast and Midwest this next month! We will be playing tunes from our new recordWhite Teeth, Black Thoughts and more from our back catalog as we continue to rehearse them and add them into the set. We will be including a smattering of Rat Pack tunes that we have fiddling around with recently, these were really fun to arrange for 4 horns and still make them sound big. Our sets are great for dancing or just hanging out with a cold beverage and your best girl. Live music is where real livin’ is, not on your computer, so come on in… it feels great to be alive.
I enjoy going to the post office everyday sending off these signed copies of the new record off from our website. So if you are itching to get the vinyl or awesome sounding CD copy, just know that when you come to our website you get personal service from the band. If there are any problems, god-forbid, I will make it right myself J. We still have a long way to go to pay off the recording expenses for this CD so with Christmas coming up and all, (wink, wink) please consider the gift of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies music or other merchandise for your family and friends. Consider also that you will be helping out 8 guys who have sweated out every last detail to give you the best for 23 years.
PS- The best is yet to come. Wink again.

It’s throwback Thursday, so I figured I would give you guys a treat! Go to our Youtube channel and check out our 1st set from way back on August 7th, 1992 at the Wow Hall in Eugene, OR… 21 years ago! We are going to be playing at the Wow Hall again on Sept 27th of this month, so come on down!
This footage was shot by the intrepid Steve Swanson who graciously donated it for your eyeballs. There is a bonus…it may be the only footage of the Dildorado in its heyday! We are all super young, funky and stupid still. I think it was the 1st performance of both Johanna of the Spirits and Modsquadrophenia. Some songs from the early early days were on their way out like Get and Go Off. At some point we are going to want to play some shows showcasing this side of ourselves again… sweaty and crazy. The band at that time was as follows:
Steve Perry- No shirt
Dan Schmid- Bass
Dana Heitman- Trumpet
Brooks Brown- Alto
James Phillips- Tenor
John Fohl- Guitar
Brian West- Drums
Chris Azorr- Keyboards
I broke the whole set up into songs, but incredibly this was just the first set that night J. The opening band that night was good friends, Village Idiot Here is the order if you want to watch it in order:
1. I’m Trapped Inside the Planet of the Rollerskating Bees
2. Ding Dong Daddy
3. Diabolic Tastemaker
4. Answering Machine
5. Get And Go Off
6. Johanna of the Spirits
7. Master and Slave
8. Teenage Brainsurgeon
9. Mom Was No Fat Broad
10. Flovilla Thatch vs. The Virile Garbage Man (DILDORADO VERSION)
Our new song/video for“Huffin’ Muggles” (off of our new record White Teeth, Black Thoughts) is a tribute inspired by the Warhol trinity of Candy Darling, Jackie Curtis, and Holly Woodlawn, but it also is a tribute to B film movie star Maria Montez ;-) and was shot in the super 8 sludgy style of director Kenneth Anger. When OUT magazine expressed interest in leading the charge and premiering it on their website, we jumped at the chance.
For those of you not in the know, Muggles is 30’s 40’s term for the reefer, not a Harry Potter reference :-) The song is like an ear to the door of a casual conversation between an old experienced “urbane” male and his younger acolytes with whom he is holding court. There is a lot of shit talking going on, and everyone is “getting loose”. There are references to William Blakes book of Poetry “Songs of Innocence and Experience”. What I was really interested in here was the kind of cultural apprenticeship angle, and the bittersweet generosity behind the transferring of hard won cultural knowledge.
The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies advocate LGBT as well as all human rights and we are proud to partner with OUT magazine in the premiere of this video. Enjoy Muggles here- http://www.out.com/entertainment/music/2013/08/27/huffin-muggles-cherry-poppin-daddies-steve-perry-drag
We hit the East Coast next week to tour behind our new record, White Teeth, Black Thoughts. At the end of July we did some sweat drenched West Coast dates and it felt great to start playing those new tunes in addition to all the CPD classics. Having 4 horns now makes all our voicings richer & brassier. We will have some more tunes rehearsed for this East Coast run. Going back to my eastern homeland gets my inner goombah rising in my blood. I can’t wait to grind some of our greasy assed swing and red tuck and roll leather schmaltz into the part of the country where it just seems makes the most sense. I’m ret to shake your temple, me paisan.
Speakin’ of grease, I dropped a CD off at Modern Man Barbershop in Portland, OR on SE Hawthorne before our show at the Alhambra. If you are in PDX and looking for a real haircut, this is the place to go. They have those rich leather chairs, hot towel straight razor shaves, and Whiskey! There is a bunch of young guys there who really know how to keep you lookin’ sharp. A few years back when we were in London my man Graham, who is an OG Mod from back in the day, drove me on a shoppin’ spree around Carnaby Street and then to the best pomade style haircut joints in the city. Being with Graham was one of those times when I felt truly fulfilled… blaring Small Faces whipping through those twisting streets in his BMW limo… perfect moments! Anyhow, I remember thinking “Why can’t I get a slick haircut like this in the good ol’ US of A?” Well thank god more and more of these places are poppin’ up stateside.
We’ve got a new rockabilly style plunging neckline ladies T! It was designed by Matt Lutsch, our resident trad tattoo artiste here in Eugene- Modern Classics Tattoo. He is the guy giving Yvette her Babooch tattoo in the “I Love American Music” video.
Yvette and Matt put their heads together on this new shirt design. We wanted something for gals that was black, cute and ideal for rockin’ the boobs, tats or both. So that shirt should be up on the CPD website as well as at the merch booth for both these upcoming shows.
See yuz on the East Coast,
We have started the process of removing White Teeth, Black Thoughts from all the European digital stores/streaming sites. We're doing this because we have a wonderful company there that is working to find great label partners for the release. Hopefully all this will result in our ability to get over there more for touring purposes as well!
We hope to have more information about this process over the course of the next few months but for now, we're sorry to say we'll have to yank the album down. This could happen (depending on the store) over the course of the next 24hrs - a week or two. If you want to grab the album from your favorite retailer beforehand we'd suggest doing so now.
Thanks as always for the support and stay tuned for more information down the road.
